Beck when he originally developed cognitive theory (Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979) to help clients see how their cognitions contribute to their problems. Yet, despite the centrality of Socratic questioning, there is considerable disagreement over a precise definition of Socratic questioning (Carey & Mullan, 2004; Overholser, 1993a, 2010). Overholser, in a series of articles (1993a, 1993b, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999), attempted to define the Socratic method for clinicians. He outlined seven types of questions that are commonly used in Socratic questioning.

Strategical analogies are analogies that are based on the tactical strategies involved in various activities, such as the planning required in chess to capture your opponent’s queen, or the positioning of a tennis ball in your opponent’s court, can help clients to see larger patterns from their random behavior. Finally, relational analogies are based on parallel relationships between two or more people, such as a parent-child relationship, teacher-student relationship, or supervisor-employee relationship (Overholser, 1993b, 1999, 2010).

The Socratic therapist stops short of doing the work for the client. Instead of explaining why the therapist believes a particular problem seems to occur, it is better to explore the client’s understanding of the problem. (Overholser, 1995, p. 290) Self-improvement in the Socratic method, according to Overholser (1996), involves an understanding of the interaction between self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and selfregulation. When these are understood, then the client’s long-term life goals can be clarified and utilized to help the client.
