The problem was that the whole group had become so comprehensively caught up in this dynamic that it was very hard for any one individual to take the necessary step back. The group could only function by not attending to what was really going on. They collectively ignored the fate of the group purpose and the way in which they were interacting. Indeed, if someone had spotted what was happening and pointed it out it is likely that they would have been seen as the one who was out of step: paradoxically, a call to attention would have seemed like a distraction.

With the ten minute delay in starting, the group had already lost thirty minutes of a ninety-minute meeting. However, Trevor remembers clearly deciding not to say anything about all this for fear of just being labelled a stirrer or troublemaker. It was only halfway through the fourth of the five meetings set aside to plan this event that something apparently miraculous happened: the group suddenly started working well, drawing on their experience to create a clear vision for the event and to make all the necessary detailed preparations.

They can only succeed in doing this if they are able to keep their attention away from the realities of their work together.
